Review: The Eternal Ones by Kirsten Miller

Full of romance and suspense, I was pleasantly surprised by The Eternal Ones.

Synopsis (from Goodreads):
What if love refused to die?

Haven Moore can’t control her visions of a past with a boy called Ethan, and a life in New York that ended in fiery tragedy. In our present, she designs beautiful dresses for her classmates with her best friend Beau. Dressmaking keeps her sane, since she lives with her widowed and heartbroken mother in her tyrannical grandmother’s house in Snope City, a tiny town in Tennessee. Then an impossible group of coincidences conspire to force her to flee to New York, to discover who she is, and who she was.

In New York, Haven meets Iain Morrow and is swept into an epic love affair that feels both deeply fated and terribly dangerous. Iain is suspected of murdering a rock star and Haven wonders, could he have murdered her in a past life? She visits the Ouroboros Society and discovers a murky world of reincarnation that stretches across millennia. Haven must discover the secrets hidden in her past lives, and loves¸ before all is lost and the cycle begins again
I'm embarrassed to admit this, but when the author, Kirsten Miller, was at the Penguin booth at BEA in May, I hesitated in picking up this YA book.  I wasn't sure that it was going to be different from all the other paranormal YA romances I had already read.  The Penguin rep handed me the book, and told me that I would love it.  I didn't believe her.  WAS I WRONG!

On the surface, I was anticipating a predictable story and one dimensional characters, but what I got was something so much more exciting.  I was not expecting author Kirsten Miller to take us on so many twists and turns in The Eternal Ones.  I started reading the book, and before I knew it I was knee deep in wanting to know everything - Who is this girl? Who is her past love?  Who can we trust?  What will happen next?  Her characters were not only interesting, they each had a little secret of their own that added to the multi-layered mystery.  I also loved the New York City setting - my favorite city in the world!

One of my other common complaints about some YA books is that they are published with a series in mind, and the initial book ends with an unsatisfying cliffhanger in the hopes of enticing readers to buy the next book.  Miller's first book  has a beginning, a middle, and a very satisfying end...but leaves enough room open for a sequel, and leaves her readers wanting more!  I don't know if there will be a sequel, but I can promise you I'm going to find out!

(Edited to add:  Yes, Kirsten Miller is working on a sequel to The Eternal Ones!)

Thank you to Penguin and to Kirsten Miller for bringing back my love for YA!

I just actually bought this yesterday and after "lightly skimming" through your review, I am not super excited about it. I can't wait to start it.

I've been wanting to read another book with a reincarnation theme since I read My Name is Memory, and this sounds perfect. Great review!

I read this one a while back as well. I loved it. Thought the same thing about the ending, in fact I believe I said something about a sequel too.
Glad you liked it as much as me.
