I love books about the high school untouchables - girls who are beautiful and have great clothes and are popular. I don't know if girls like that exist in real life, or if I would even want to be friends with them if they did, but I love reading about them!
Aria, Spencer, Emily and Hannah are the untouchable girls, or at least they were when Alison was their ringleader, and secret keeper. After Alison's disappearance, the four remaining members of their little clique have a hard time denying their own secrets.
Full disclosure time! I read the book because the TV show was coming out and I wanted to be able to compare the two. After I listened to the audiobook of the first book of the series, I had full intentions of reading or listening to, the rest of the series before watching the TV show. I had good intentions! The show hooked me, and I stopped reading the series, but I did enjoy it.
I may have enjoyed Pretty Little Liars more had I read the book instead of listened to the audio. While I fully understand how "kids talk these days" it's not what I want whining through my iPod. The reader's voice was a tad irritating and took me a while to get used to. Once I was into the story, the screechy voice was easier to ignore. I have to admit, though, I cringed a few times in the beginning. If I can listen to a whiny voice reading the book...actually reading the written words without it must be fantastic!
I had several fellow book bloggers tell me long before the series that I should read the series, as it was one of their favorites. Maybe one of these days I will continue with the books, but for now, I am enjoying the TV show - aside from the fact that all the cool, young girls from the shows I watched in high school are now the MOMS on this show (so depressing!).
Synopsis:
Everyone has something to hide - especially high-school juniors Spencer, Aria, Emily, and Hanna.
Spencer covets her sister's boyfriend. Aria's fantasizing about her English teacher. Emily's crushing on the new girl at school. And Hanna uses some ugly tricks to stay beautiful.
But they've all kept an even bigger secret since their friend Alison vanished.
How do I know? Because I know everything about the bad girls they were and the naughty girls they are now. And guess what? I'm telling.

These girls sound like the kind that we love to hate! I'm not sure the series is for me.
These are the girls we love to hate, but the book didn't have any of the high school angst that gives me a belly ache. I'm not sure I'll be reading the rest of the series, but I'm enjoying the pure entertainment of the tv show.
