Even better than the first!

I hear people say all the time, "There are no 'boy books'!" To them, I say, have your son read THE FOURTH STALL! Then, when your book-loving boy asks for more, give him THE FOURTH STALL, PART II. Doesn't get easier than that.
Chris Rylander pulls out all the stops in THE FOURTH STALL, PART II, the follow up to his debut book about a boy who runs a business of favors out of the fourth stall of the East Wing boys' bathroom.

Mac, Vince and the crew are back in business, and this time trouble walks into the Fourth Stall. You know what they say, grade school girls are more dangerous than shotguns. Enter Trixie VanParkway, sixth grader. Mac knows she's trouble, and she wants to get a teacher off her back. She and Mr. Kjelson have been seen arguing in the hallway, but what about? Mac and Vince can't help but like the guy, especially since he's a Cubs fan. Can Mac really get Mr. K fired?

In addition to Trixie's teacher problems, a new Vice Principal hell-bent on catching Mac in the act, and cleaning up the school or shutting it down. Can Mac save his business? Can he save the whole school?

From the very first page, Chris Rylander will have readers chuckling out loud. He has already mastered rule #1 of writing for middle grade boys: Grab them from the very beginning. Done. There were several times, I laughed out loud, and even read passages out loud to my two boys!

I know I'm not supposed to quote from an unfinished galley, but I can't help myself. There were so many wonderfully hilarious tidbits, like:

- "...at first I didn't pay much attention to Mr. K (that's what all the kids call him since his name is like a phonics test of bravery, complete with a man-eating, double-consonant-breathing dragon right at the start)."

"He handed me my hall pass and I headed off toward the administration offices.
The place where happiness goes to die."

I can remember back in 2010, when I first read the blurb of THE FOURTH STALL, I knew I had to get my hands on it. It sounded funny and smart, and something my son was going to love. Right on the money, it was fantastic.

I applaud Chris Rylander for bringing us another winner for middle grade boys!

Review: Across The Universe by Beth Revis

The first book in a trilogy, ACROSS THE UNIVERSE is a science fiction thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Sometime in the late 21st century, Amy and her parents are cryogenically frozen. They will remain so as they take a 300 year long journey across the universe to another planet safe for human inhabitants. While they are asleep, hundreds of other people will be aboard the ship, Godspeed, making sure it reaches its destination. Fifty years ahead of schedule, Amy is "unplugged" and woken up, almost killed. No one is sure who unplugged her, but the leader of Godspeed, Eldest, is not happy with her, since difference is the #1 reason for discord. Amy is different. She looks different, she talks differently, and she is not one of them. Elder is fascinated by Amy, but he also needs to find out who is unplugging and killing the frozens, and why.

The ship itself, its inhabitants, its ruler, "Eldest", and its history are entirely fascinating. Beth Revis put a staggering amount of detail into the world of Godspeed, even to the English dialect that evolved over the course of 250+ years.  Enter Amy, a girl that literally fell asleep in the 21st century and woke up on a spaceship 250 years in the future. When she realizes that she was awoken 50 years too soon, and will spend the rest of her days breathing recycled air, drinking recycled water, and will never feel the real sun on her face, that's a lot to process. Add a murderer to the story, as well as some moral-bending dilemmas and you have a page-turner in your hands.

The only thing I would change about this book is the first scene. I didn't find it at all believable.   Fortunately, I trusted the opinions of many of the bloggers who reviewed this book before me, like The Story Siren, Write Meg, and Novel Novice.so I didn't have too hard of a time getting past it. Once I did, I tore through the pages.

The book is told from alternating perspectives - Amy's and Elder's. Elder is the second in command on the ship, Godspeed, and is fascinated by Amy, the only girl on the ship near his age. Even though the split narrative is not usually my favorite, especially in YA, it works here, as it ensures a level of mystery about its two main characters, while allowing readers to get a sense for who these people are and what they struggle with.

Love story? Sort of. I actually like that Beth didn't throw Amy and Elder into the deep end of this partnership. It remained believable - after all, Amy is trying to comprehend and adjust to this new world - and it also leaves room for growth for the next two installments. Love isn't really discussed on Godspeed as a concept at all, instead they have "The Season" for mating (ew.). Something tells me Beth will not allow this mating thing to go on in the next books without addressing Love.

A sign of any good book is when something about it leaves me thinking for several days afterward. Several scenes from the book had me thinking. The first was some of the immoral practices of Eldest, in order to keep order on his ship. I found myself strangely in agreement with his reasons. How would I feel if I were in charge of hundreds of lives on a ship with limited space and limited resources?  There really is no jail or security, so how could I ensure the safety of everyone on board? Second, the issue of monoethnicity - if you only had a thousand people on a ship for 300 years, wouldn't monoethnicity happen naturally? How would that effect the new planet? Would individual races eventually evolve? The next thing that had me thinking was when Amy, Elder and Harley opened the trunks from the frozen passengers. Amy's family had to pack trunks to bring with them. I couldn't help but wonder, If I were traveling to another planet, what would I pack in my trunk? I'm happy to say, Amy's Dad packed lots of books!

It may have taken me a long time to finally get to ACROSS THE UNIVERSE by Beth Revis, but it was worth the wait! For anyone looking for a great sci-fi Young Adult series, start here!

I am always thrilled and honored when someone asks me for a book recommendation! Recently, I was asked to come up with a "short list" of suggestions for a 3rd grade book club in my area. I tried to think outside the Wimpy Kid/39 Clues/Harry Potter box, since most kids who joined the book club had already read these books (and those books were probably the cause of their excitement for books!!) The list I came up with was so darn good, I thought I would share it with all of you - and ask which books I should have added!

Review: The Crown by Nancy Bilyeau

A perfect blend of historical fiction and mystery! If Dan Brown and Phillippa Gregory had a love child, she would be Nancy Bilyeau.

The year is 1537, King Henry VIII is on the throne next to his newest bride; the Church of England threatens the old ways of Christianity; and aristocrats and religious leaders alike are jockeying for power. Meanwhile, Joanna Stafford, a girl of noble blood and a Novice at Dartford Priory, breaks her vows and travels to the side of her beloved cousin, Lady Margaret Bulmer, who is scheduled to burn at the stake for high treason and plotting against the King. Sister Joanna and her father, the 3rd Duke of Buckingham, caused a scene at the execution and were swiftly arrested, along with a mysterious, but helpful stranger, Geoffrey Scovill.

After several months locked in the Tower of London for her possible association with Margaret's crimes, Stephen Gardiner, the Bishop of Winchester, has a demand to make of Joanna - in order to save her father, she must find a holy relic hidden somewhere back in her priory. She travels back to the priory with two Friars, neither of which know her quest, or the consequences should she fail.

Well-researched, interesting, and suspenseful, THE CROWN was a very good, fast-paced read. There were so many layers to the story, both in regards to the crown, as well as the political story of the time. The story of the relic was fascinating, both in its holy significance, and its legendary mystical properties.

I must admit, there were several times I had to hit Google to refresh my memory on the history of King Henry VIII, as well as the other royal houses of the time. I tend to get a bit dizzy, especially with all of his wives, their family connections, and the men trying to get into the King's favor. Considering that all of my knowledge of 16th century England is from Shakespeare and historical fiction novels, it's always best to check with the facts.

I was also so intrigued by the idea of the Crown that Joanna was sent to find, I also spent some time researching other holy relics, their significance and where they are today. I am happy to report that author Nancy Bilyeau took her research seriously, which makes this story even more fascinating.

There were a few aspects of the novel that seemed a bit incongruent, or unnecessary - the twist with Joanna's father at the end of the story, and the constant threat of a romantic interest for Joanna. I could discuss these two points further, but they were not so significant as to ruin the novel for me. They were my own minor hiccups in what was, on the whole, a very good read.

I believe the ending left room for another book, if not a sequel, than definitely a companion piece. There were so many wonderful characters in THE CROWN, I could see a novel exploring the backgrounds and lives of any one of them!

If you are a fan of Phillippa Gregory or Dan Brown (or both!) you must read THE CROWN.

We had a lot going on yesterday with the ALA Awards announcments, and I wanted to let you all know about the 50th Anniversary Celebration for Madeleine L’Engle’s A WRINKLE IN TIME, so I'm a bit late checking in with you all on my weekly reads.

So many terrific books were honored yesterday, my To Be Read list, which I have vowed to keep somewhat under control, grew once again.

50 years ago, Madeleine L'Engle introduced A WRINKLE IN TIME to the world.

A new 50th Anniversary Edition is available with a special features including scrapbook photos, manuscript pages, foreward by Katherine Peterson, afterward by Madeleine L'Engle's granddaughter, and a Murry-O’Keefe family tree.

I admit. I have not read A WRINKLE IN TIME...yet.

Review: The Last Little Blue Envelope by Maureen Johnson

Even better than the first!

In this sequel to Maureen Johnson's 13 Little Blue Envelopes (click here for review), Ginny gets an e-mail from Oliver, the guy who found her lost bag containing the little blue envelopes from Aunt Peg, the letters she thought were lost forever - including the mysterious, unopened 13th envelope. He asks her to meet him in England during Christmas break, so he can give her the envelopes, but there's a catch.

Ginny goes on yet another adventure, but this time, even though she is not alone, the decisions and mistakes are hers to make. She is the driving force behind this journey, in which she finds love, friends, and a bit more of herself.

Even though THE LAST LITTLE BLUE ENVELOPE is full of the suspense, excitement and intrigue we loved in the first book, there is a darker element constantly lurking, adding multiple layers to this plot. The characters are more fully developed, as they remain with Ginny for the duration of the book, and readers are able to see their depth. Just like the relationships, the conflicts more serious, and Ginny is making choices on her own without her Aunt Peg's letters to guide her. In the end, she might just make the biggest choice of her life.

I felt like the first book, 13 LITTLE BLUE ENVELOPES, was more about Ginny's discovery of her wild Aunt Peg, while she was pushed beyond her comfort zone to follow in her footsteps. THE LAST LITTLE BLUE ENVELOPE was Ginny's discovery of herself, and she was the driving force of the group. Both book receive very high marks from me! The writing, the characters, the punchy dialogue, I loved it all!

So much fun!

Virginia Blackstone is a shy girl, doesn't feel comfortable talking to boys, and she certainly doesn't act impulsively. She is the complete opposite of her eccentric aunt, who sends her on a quest. In each of 13 Little Blue Envelopes, Aunt Peg gives Ginny instructions on where to go and what to do - in Europe.

"So Aunt Peg was exactly the kind of person who would send her to England alone, with a package from a Chinese restaurant. That wasn't so odd.
The odd part was that Aunt Peg had been dead for three months."

So, Ginny gets on a plane with no guidebook, no cell phone, and no idea of where she is headed. She is armed with nothing but her courage and her envelopes and embarks on a journey that will change her life.

Ginny meets the most interesting people, like Mari, a sweet and eccentric artist; Beppe, bearer of gelato and cake; the Knapp family, marathon tourists; and a group of friendly Australians. She doesn't see Big Ben, the leaning Tower of Pisa, or the Mona Lisa, but she is introduced to hidden cafes, and dares to ask a boy out for coffee. She might find herself in a bit of trouble, more than once, but unbeknownst to herself, Ginny is a survivor.

I need an Aunt Peg to kick me in the ass and tell me to go to Europe! Instead, we have Auntie Maureen to gift this magical journey in the form of 13 LITTLE BLUE ENVELOPES. I'm enamored by the idea of traveling while you're young enough to stay in hostiles, and fearless enough to take a path without knowing exactly where it may lead.

I absolutely loved this book! I read it in a little over a day, but it has stuck with me, and given me such a desire to travel!

Warning: This book will give you wanderlust.

2012 Book Resolutions

1. Read 100 Books this year

I came in under my 100 goal this year, due to some reading slumps and adjustments in my work/family/blog life. I think as long as I stick to Resolution #2, this will not be as much of a problem this year.

2. Read More Books I Want to Read

There is so much excitement that surrounds NEW books. They're all shiny and pretty! Instead of worrying about the *next new* great book, I am going to make more of an effort to bring my To-Be-Read list under control, and focus on the books that I really want to read, regardless of their publication date.

3. Post at least 2 Reviews Each Week

Reading is the easy part. Interestingly, it's often the books I love that give me trouble when it comes down to writing the reviews. If I write 3 reviews per week, for 26 weeks, I'm still only reviewing 76 books for you throughout the year. Hm, I'll work on that.

4. Keep My Menu Bar Up-to-Date

You are a very busy person. Your work, family and home take up most of your time, so you might take a break from me for a while. No worries! I got you covered. My 2012 Reviews list under the Menu bar on the left over there. See it? If you want the reviews, and just the reviews, go there. I will also put little ** next to the ones you need to pay attention to - these are the books I highly recommend.

5. Comment on Other Blogs More Often

I have my favorite blogs that I read...they aren't a secret, they are over there on the left. *waves* If I comment on any blogs, it's usually going to be those over there. Makes sense, they're my favorites. The problem with this? There are so many other wonderful book blogs out there that I have basically cut myself off from. I don't read my Google Reader any longer. I just go to my Favorite Blogs bar and see what my pals are up to. I will venture off my little Island of Blogging Bliss and make some new friends this year.

6. I Will Not Bring a Book Everywhere

This doesn't exactly sound like a resolution a book blogger should be making, does it? Well, my book has become my crutch. If I go someplace where I don't know a lot of people, I will take out my book and read. Back in the day, I was a very social person. Now, I'm "That Book Lady" in the corner. NOT. GOOD.

7. I Will Give Away More Books

No, I don't mean contests. (sorry!) I donate a fair amount of books to causes and organizations. Last year, I gave books to my library, a children's hospital, and the schools in my area. This year, with the help of my two boys, I vow to donate even more books, in the hopes that my books will go into the hands of someone who might not normally read, or someone who doesn't own their own books. Books have a life, and they aren't living when they sit on a shelf collecting dust. A part of their soul dies when its not being read.

8. I Will Keep My Book Piles Off the Floor of My Office

This one's for you, honey! I need to follow through on Resolution #7 in order to make room for the new books that come into my house, but my books all need to be on shelves this year. In the meantime, I am picking up another bookcase this week to get all of my piles (they're organized into categories!) off the floor (But they're on the floor in an otherwise lovely office area). I can't promise that the books will not be shelved two rows deep, though.

9. I Will Not Bite Off More Than I Can Chew

I have to admit, I don't accept that many books for review, I never did. At least not in comparison to some other book bloggers. But, I'm a little fish in a very big pond! When I do accept a book for review, it's usually something special, and I am rarely disappointed. But, I still want to keep this on my list to remind me of who I am.

10. Continue to Avoid the Drama

In any community, there is drama, especially on Twitter. I am amazed by how eloquently some Twitterers (especially authors...who write 400 page books!) can make a perfect, profound statement on Twitter. Since I am still finding it hard to express myself in only 140 characters, I tend to stay out of any brewhaha in the book world. That being said, if I have read all sides, and I feel strongly about something or someone,, I will stand up for what's right. In the meantime, I will continue to keep on blogging on my own blissful little island of books.

Now, if I could only make and stick to my PERSONAL Resolutions!

(Yes, one of which includes getting my butt running again! I don't know whose body I'm currently inhabiting, but I don't like it. I'm going to fight my way out of this one and get my other one back pronto!)

Review: Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper

Interesting, insightful, and intelligent.
Synopsis:
Eleven-year-old Melody has a photographic memory. Her head is like a video camera that is always recording. Always. And there’s no delete button. She’s the smartest kid in her whole school—but NO ONE knows it.

Most people—her teachers and doctors included—don’t think she’s capable of learning, and up until recently her school days consisted of listening to the same preschool-level alphabet lessons again and again and again. If only she could speak up, if only she could tell people what she thinks and knows. But she can’t. She can’t talk. She can’t walk. She can’t write.

Being stuck inside her head is making Melody go out of her mind—that is, until she discovers something that will allow her to speak for the first time ever. At last Melody has a voice . . . but not everyone around her is ready to hear it.

From the time I was really little - maybe just a few months old - words were like sweet, liquid gifts, and I drank them like lemonade.

Told in the first person from Melody's perspective, OUT OF MY MIND is a story with a fascinating premise. There are many types of Cerebral Palsy, ranging from mild (some physical uncoordination) to severe (quadriplegia). For those that don't know (and I didn't until 8 years ago), Spastic quadriplegia is most severe type of Cerebral Palsy. This is they type of CP that Melody has. She can't walk, she can't talk, she can't feed herself, bathe herself, or ask for help. She is NOT mentally retarded, regardless of the way she looks on the outside. She may not be able to walk, and she might need a bib because she drools, but she's one of the smartest kids in her school.

Above anything else, Melody doesn't want to be ignored. She wants you to talk to her, even though she can't talk back. She wants to let people know what she's thinking, but many of the people around her probably don't even know she has thoughts in her head to begin with. She's trapped. Imagine how terrifying, how frustrating.

There's so much my mother doesn't know.

I must have read this line ten times. Let it soak in. Then, a few pages later, I read a scene between Melody and her dad.

"Your life is not going to be easy, little Melody," he'd say quietly. "If I could switch places with you, I'd do it in a heartbeat. You know that, don't you?"

In OUT OF MY MIND, Melody is given a Medi-Talker, a communication device which is an adapted computer that hooks on to the tray of her wheelchair. This of course only comes in after weeks of prescriptions, insurance forms, financial statements, school documents, and medical forms are mailed and re-mailed. (I'm so glad Sharon Draper included this in her book - every. little. thing. these kids need require more forms than a US citizenship!) For the first time in her life, she is able to communicate with her parents, her babysitter, her teachers, and her friends.

OUT OF MY MIND takes a very sensitive topic, and puts wheels on it. The reader won't ever pity Melody - they will get frustrated for her, angry for her, and laugh with her. But they will never, never, pity her. More than anything else, thank you, Sharon Draper, for not making this an unrealistic corny story with a perfect ending.
If nothing else, please walk away from this review with my last thought. If you have someone in your life who has a child with a disability like Cerebral Palsy, or if there is a child in your school with a severe disability, read this book. It may not give you the whole picture of the challenges a family like Melody's faces each and every day, but it will give you an appreciation for the victories that most of us take for granted. Put OUT OF MY MIND in the hands of your children!

Review: Shine by Lauren Myracle

Cat's gay best friend, Patrick, is brutally beaten into a coma. While the local police and townspeople are satisfied with thinking that the beating was the result of drunken out-of-towners, Cat will not rest until she finds out the truth behind this hate crime. In the small, poor town of Black Creek, troubles of abuse, drugs, and sex are swept away, forgotten, ignored. Cat knows this first hand, as she had her own horrific experience years ago, which was brushed off just as quickly and coldly as Patrick's beating. No one stood up for her then, but Cat is determined to find out what really happened to Patrick, and stand up for him now. Unfortunately, there is more to the story than meets the eye, as Cat puts herself in dangers as she fights to expose the truth.

"Someone needed to track down whoever went after Patrick, and that someone was me."

A heartbreaking book, SHINE was a heavy read and author Lauren Myracle pulled no punches in telling this difficult story. Coming in under 400 pages, she managed to paint a very realistic, and very dark, picture of a poor small town, its people, and their struggles with their very harsh every day life.

While I was approximately 100 pages into the book, I remember wondering why Lauren Myracle chose SHINE for her title. There didn't seem to be much light in Cat's world at all, certainly not enough Shine. Cat's world was, in a world, dark. Then, I came across this passage, and it became clear to me. Cat recalled Mama Sweetie, Patrick's grandmother, and her surrogate grandmother, bestowing on her some wisdom:

She wagged her finger and said, "God loves you even on your blackest days, and He will always, always be there to guide you home. All you have to do is look for the light of His love. As long as you remember that one thing, why, then you can cast off the darkness and shine again, can't you?"

A girl living in a tough world like Black Creek needed a Mama Sweetie. Cat knew her town had its problems, and the people she knew were involved in some nasty things, but she courageously pushes her way into the ugliest of dwellings, and deals with the creepiest of characters, uncovering fearsome truths, all for the justice of her friend, Patrick.

In short, SHINE is an unforgettable book.

I had not read any of the books that Lauren Myracle is best known for - bff, ttyl and l8r g8r, from her Internet Girls series, or Rhymes with Witches - and through these edgy books, she has already seen her fair share of controversy. Her Internet Girls series regularly ends up on the ALA's Most Challenged Books list. So, when her latest book, SHINE, ended up in the news for the National Book Award controversy (see article link below for the full story) I had to read it and find out what this author was all about! I didn't even know what SHINE was about before I read it, but Lauren and Amulet handled the situation with such grace, I wanted to show my support.

Well, this week was back-to-work, back-to-school, and back to catching up on all the things I didn't do while everyone was home for the holidays. You know what that means? I didn't read nearly as much as I wanted to!

Books Read This Week:

BLOOD RED ROAD by Moira Young (Margaret K. McElderry Books; June 2011)

I actually wrote the review for BRR already! This never happens, but I loved it. I wouldn't say it's better than The Hunger Games, but it was a great book.

13 LITTLE BLUE ENVELOPES by Maureen Johnson (HarperTeen; 2006; hardcover/available in ppb) I'm embarrassed by how long this book has been sitting on my shelf. I'm so glad I got to it, though, because it's really fun. Review to come.

I'm not quite through this one yet, but it's turning out to be a wonderfully rich story, one I want to savour.

THE GOLD COAST by Nelson DeMille (Warner Books; 1997)

This is a re-read for me. I started it a while ago and didn't finish it, but one of my book clubs is reading it, so I decided to give it another shot. So far, so good.

Currently Listening To:

GAME OF THRONES: Book 1 by George R. R. Martin

I am not even half way through this one yet. I tried listening on 1.5 speed, but there are so many characters, I get completely lost if I don't hear whose chapter it is. Normal speed it is, and I am enjoying it so far. I can't wait to see the show!

After the week I had last week, I think it would be a small miracle if I finished the two books I'm reading now, let alone start a new one. That being said...I really want to get to:

IRISES by Francisco X. Stork (Arthur A. Levine Books; January 2012; Young Adult)

I became an evangelist for Stork's The Last Summer of the Death Warriors back in 2010. It was such a "boy" book, though, I can't help but be curious about how he handles a friendship between two sisters. At least, that's what I think this book is about!

1. THE NIGHT CIRCUS by Erin Morgenstern (Doubleday; 11/13/11)
Took my breath away, to the point where my review makes me sound like a gushing idiot. I knew from the minute I read the last page, this would be in my #1 spot for 2011.

2. READY PLAYER ONE by Ernest Cline (Crown; 8/16/11)
Totally took me by surprise. I listened to the audio read by Wil Wheaton and it was brilliant! I highly recommend this one to anyone who remembers the 80s, anyone who likes video games, and anyone who is looking for a smart, witty, and exciting book.

3. 11/22/63 by Stephen King (Scribner; 11/8/11)
I haven't read a Stephen King novel in a very, very long time. I'm wimpy when it comes to the master of horror. 11/22/63 was extremely clever, with just enough gore to remind you who wrote it, but not so much that you lose sleep wondering what's hiding inside your walls. If you love Stephen King, don't miss it. If you're afraid of Stephen King, this is the one to read.

4. UNBROKEN by Laura Hillenbrand (Random House; 11/16/11)
By far, the best WWII non-fiction book I have ever read. It's truly a survivor story that will leave you in awe of Louie Zamparini and all of the men and women who so bravely serve our country. Heartbreaking. Inspiring. Unfathomable. I had to keep reminding myself I was reading non-fiction!

5. THE WEIRD SISTERS by Eleanor Brown (Amy Einhorn; 1/20/11)
This is the book I wished I had written. Three sisters, Shakespeare scholar father, and lots of drama. Beautifully written, funny, and original. I have not seen this book on any of the "Best of" lists, and I really hope it is not overlooked any further.

6. BOSSYPANTS by Tina Fey (Reagan Arthur; 4/5/11)
Laugh out loud funny! I love Tina Fey, and now I love Don Fey too. If you really want a treat, listen to the audio version of Bossypants, read by Tina Fey, as only she can with her sarcastic, self-depricating tone that her fans know and love.

7. HORNS by Joe Hill (William Morrow; 2/16/11)
Such a cool book! I honestly had no idea who Joe Hill's dad was when I read Horns, so it is with even greater pleasure that I can put a father and son on my top 10 list! How cool is that? Horns was like nothing I had ever read before. Joe Hill is clearly a product of his father, but can hold his own in every way. Suspenseful, twisted, and hilarious!

8. YOU KNOW WHEN THE MEN ARE GONE by Siobhan Fallon (Amy Einhorn; 1/20/11)
Every American should read this book. It reminds us of the sacrifice our soldiers and their families make each and every day. It gives us a glimpse into a world that I have always respected, but not truly understood. Filled with a collection of stories, this small book will leave a huge impact on your heart.

9. DON'T SING AT THE TABLE by Adriana Trigiani (Harper; 10/4/11)
You all know how I love Adriana Trigiani, right? Her fiction is among my favorites, but her first non-fiction book was terrific. It is her welcoming her readers into her home, to take a look at her family, and to share the life lessons her grandmothers taught her. I pick this book up over and over again. As someone who didn't really know my grandmothers, thank you to Adriana for sharing hers with me.

10. DRINKING CLOSER TO HOME by Jessica Anya Blau (Harper Perennial; 1/18/11)
I had no idea when I read this book that it would stick with me the way that it did. I loved it much in the same way I loved The Glass Castle. Crazy family, lots of drama, tons of laughter, and buckets of tears. When I can't stop thinking about a book, it ends up on my favorites shelf. This is another book I haven't seen on anyone else's list before, and I think this is another reason why it appeals to me so much. Read it with your book club! You can thank me later.

BEST YOUNG ADULT

1. THE SCORPIO RACES by Maggie Stiefvater (Scholastic; 10/18/11)

As far as I'm concerned, Maggie Stiefvater can do no wrong. The Scorpio Races is just as good, if not better, than any of her previous books.

2. A MONSTER CALLS by Patrick Ness (Candlewick; 5/11)

What can I say about this book that I haven't already said? I seriously overshared in my original review...

3. BEAUTY QUEENS by Libba Bray (Scholastic; 5/24/11)

Libba Bray knocks my socks off. That is all.

4. LEGEND by Marie Lu (Putnam; 11/29/11)

Legend sucked me in from page one, and I couldn't put it down. June and Day are two of my favorite characters from everything I read all year. Don't miss this one!

5. ASHFALL by Mike Mullin (Tanglewood; 11/27/11)

Amazing... Mike Mullin nailed this one. I keep describing it as The Road for Young Adults...but it really is so much more than that. Read it. Trust me.

6. THE DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE by Laini Taylor (Little, Brown; 9/27/11)

The writing blew me away. The characters, the scenery, the storyline...all amazing. Some of the elements we have seen before, but Laini Taylor pieces it all together with beautiful prose. Gorgeous book!

7. THE IRON KNIGHT by Julie Kagawa (Harlequin Teen; 10/25/11)

I love this series. When Julie wrote The Iron Queen, I said it was my favorite in the series, and no way did I think it could be topped, especially not by the 4th book! She did it. The Iron Knight was even bettter!

8. BEAUTIFUL CHAOS (Beautiful Creatures #3) by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl (Little, Brown; 10/18/11)

Another one of my favorite YA series came in with the 3rd book that knocked me out. The dream team does it again!

9. VIRALS by Kathy Riechs (Razorbill; 11/2/10)

Such a cool book. It's original, and exciting, and actually a little geeky. I like that. Best known for her Temperance Brennan series (on which the show Bones is based), the Virals series is her first attempt at Young Adult, and I'm hooked!

10. SHINE by Lauren Myracle (Amulet; 5/1/11)

This book was so much more than I could possibly summarize in a few sentences. It's honest, raw, shocking, and will get you downright good and angry.

Last on my list, but first in my heart. Lauren Myracle has shown such grace this year, I am a new fan of her work, and her character. I am looking forward to catching up on the rest of her work.

Yes, I gave away another copy of The Book Thief! I always have to have a copy on my shelf for the next person who asks me what they should read. Duh!

MONEYBALL by Michael Lewis (W.W. Norton and Co; April 2004; Paperback)
I got this book primarily for The Man, since he likes to read non-fiction, and he's a baseball guy. Besides, we have to lead by example - no seeing the movie until you've read the book first!

ACROSS THE UNIVERSE by Beth Revis (Razorbill; November 2011; Paperback)
I have been wanting to read this book forever, but when it showed up on Kami Garcia's YA Dystopian Recommendations list, I couldn't wait any longer!

FROMMER'S ITALY 2012 (John Wiley & Sons; Oct. 2011)
I know I could find everything I needed and then some on the Frommer's website, but there is something so satisfying about taking out a pencil, highlighter or red pen and marking up a guidebook with notes of all the things you want to see. I'm getting ready for my fantasy vacation in Italy, hopefully to occur in 2014, the year in which I will reach a milestone birthday.

Now, the REALLY good stuff!!

When I read the synopsis for HERO'S GUIDE, I immediately thought what a great animated movie it could be! This looks like it's going to be a lot of fun!

Prince Liam, Prince Frederic, Prince Duncan, and Prince Gustav. You've never heard of them, have you? These are the princes who saved Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Snow White, and Rapunzel, respectively, and yet, thanks to those lousy bards who wrote the tales, you likely know them only as "Prince Charming." but all of this is about to change. Rejected by their princesses and cast out of their castles, Liam, Frederic, Duncan, and Gustav stumble upon an evil plot that could endanger each of their kingdoms. Now, it's up to them to triumph over their various shortcomings, take on trolls, bandits, dragons, witches, and other assorted terrors, and become the heroes no one ever thought they could be.

THE BILLIONAIRE'S CURSE (The Archer Legacy - Book One) by Richard Newsome (Walden Pond Press; April 2011; Paperback; Ages 8-12)
The third and final book in this trilogy, THE MASK OF DESTINY, is due to hit bookstores in May 2012. I thought the premise of this middle grade trilogy sounded so cool, I wanted to start at the beginning with Book One. Looks good!

World Book Night: April 23, 2012

The United States will participate in World Book Night for the first time this year!

World Book Night is an annual celebration designed to spread a love of reading and books. To be held in the U.S. as well as the U.K. and Ireland on April 23, 2012. It will see tens of thousands of people go out into their communities to spread the joy and love of reading by giving out free World Book Night paperbacks.

There will be ONE MILLION books given away in the United States on April 23, 2012. And another million given away in the UK.

Review: Beautiful Chaos (Beautiful Creatures, #3) by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl

This series keeps getting better!

Lena broke the universe at her claiming in BEAUTIFUL DARKNESS, and in BEAUTIFUL CHAOS, the consequences are taking over. Locusts, heat, fires, earthquakes and storms are affecting everyone in Gatlin, but the Casters are also suffering, as their abilities are misfiring. Ethan is having a new nightmare, and is slowly losing bits of himself as he can't even remember his phone number. The balance must be restored, and everyone, including Amma, is searching for a solution, but what will they have to sacrifice to restore order? Can they figure it out before the 18th moon?

Readers are treated to an engaging and suspenseful installment in a series that stays fresh and exciting, and keeps me coming back for more.

Typically, the third book in any YA series is the kiss of death that sends me sulking back to the adult section of my bookstore, but there are a few exceptions and BEAUTIFUL CHAOS is one of them. Instead of becoming frustrated and disappointed, this installment was infused with energy and conflict. One of the things I insist upon with any series, is that each book can stand on its own, instead of taking one large conflict and stretching it across several books. Kami and Margaret manage to have new challenges, new conflicts, and new characters introduced in each book, while our favorite characters continue to evolve.

I devoured BEAUTIFUL CHAOS during my Week of YA (the week between Christmas and New Years) and it was a highlight of the week.

One of the things that sets this series apart from other YA series, is it is told from Ethan's point of view. Since I listened to the audio of Beautiful Creatures (Book 1), I can't help but hear Kevin T. Collins's voice in my head as I read, and it's wonderful!

Some parents ask me about the *ahem* physical aspect of Lena and Ethan's relationship. It's always nice to say, there are no worries here. Don't get me wrong, there is attraction, and heat, but I also like that Ethan can't touch Lena or kiss her for too long without his skin literally burning - keeps this relationship PG-13. As a parent, I can appreciate this convenient little flaw.

If you're looking for a great YA supernatural series, pick up BEAUTIFUL CREATURES. If a series passes my 3rd book test, it's got to be terrific!

Started my year off with a bang!

Selected as the Summer 2011 KidsNext list at Indiebound.org, BLOOD RED ROAD has been lauded as "Better than The Hunger Games" by MTV's Hollywood Crush Blog.

In a post-apocalyptic time long after the "Wreckers" have savaged the land and its resources, Saba is an 18 year old girl who has never been off her family's property of Silverlake. She has known few people outside of her immediate family - her twin brother, Lugh; her 9 year old sister, Emmi; her Pa; and her Ma, who died birthing Emmi. One day, four robed horsemen kill her father and take her brother away. Saba, usually reliant on her brother's wisdom and strength, promises to find him and bring him home. Setting out on a journey into unknown lands, Saba learns, she struggles, she fights, she fights, and she leads.

Saba's journey is not only an expedition of unknown lands, but it is also a self-discovery. The reader sees her gradual, and sometimes not-so-subtle, changes and becomes attached to this wiley, stubborn and spicy character. Realistically flawed, we root for her every step of the way.

I can not lie, it took me a while to get used to the phonetic spellings, lack of punctuation, and general poor grammar that had been handed down to Saba through generations devoid books, school, or communication. (It made me appreciate Moira Young's editor!) almost put BLOOD RED ROAD aside, but there was so much praise, I kept going. I am SO glad I did! Once I got used to the language, I learned to appreciate it, and its meaning to the people living in this society...and I couldn't put the book down if I tried!

BLOOD RED ROAD has been compared to THE HUNGER GAMES by MTV's Hollywood Crush Blog, and scores of reviewers since. Sure, I could write an entire dissertation comparing and contrasting the two books, and especially the two female kick-ass protagonists. Instead, I will only say that if you liked THE HUNGER GAMES, you will, in all likelihood, enjoy BLOOD RED ROAD.

Toward the end of the book, I worried about the conclusion. I doubted Moira Young's ability to wrap up her complex story in a satisfying way. There is nothing I hate more than an exciting book that leaves us hanging. Not so with BRR. Moira gives us a beginning, a middle and a satisfying end, while leaving a promise for more. Even though toward the end it felt a bit like a Jerry Bruckheimer movie - just when you think it's over, BAM! here comes another conflict that needs to be resolved - there was a lot of action and suspense, I can definitely see a movie adaptation in the works.

Adventure, suspense, friendships, family drama, and romance - BLOOD RED ROAD had it all! As the first book read in 2012, I think I'm off to a great start!

I am a little disappointed in the paperback edition. Dust Lands is the name of the series, but by giving DUST LANDS top billing on the paperback, it looks like a completely different book. This is confusing. I'm assuming Saba needed to look older on the cover (she's 18, not exactly the little girl on the hardback cover) so a change needed to be made. This isn't my problem, though, it's the title itself. Confusing, right?

Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper (Atheneum Books for Young Readers; March 2010; Grades 4-6) I had actually pitched an idea for a book to someone, only to learn that Sharon Draper did it first! I'm glad I read her book, because that would have been very embarrassing! I'm not giving up on my original idea, though...so stay tuned!
Beautiful Chaos (Beautiful Creatures Book #3) by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl (Little,Brown Books for Young Readers; October 2011; hardcover; 528 pages; Young Adult) Oh, the dream team is back with Book 3, and it was just as exciting as the first two! I love this YA series, and can't wait for Book 4!!

Review: A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness; Illustrated by Jim Kay

Stunning. Took my breath away!

I am going to share two reviews with you today. The first I will write as if you are visiting my blog for the first time, and you're looking for a simple review of an incredible book. The second, I am writing to you in the dark, and we are going to have a very personal conversation between friends, because this is no simple book.

THE FIRST:

"The monster showed up just after midnight. As they do."

Every night, Conor had the same nightmare. One night at 12:07, Conor woke up from that nightmare and came face to face with a monster. The monster was startled that Conor wasn't afraid of him. This monster wasn't nearly as scary as his nightmares, neither the nightmares he had while asleep, nor the nightmares he experienced while Conor was awake. Conor had bullies tormenting him at school, a grandmother who didn't seem to like him very much, a father who rarely left his other family in America to visit him, and his Mum was battling cancer.

The monster returned to visit Conor, promising him to tell him three stories. The fourth story was up to Conor to tell. It must be his story and it might just be his most difficult challenge yet, because the monster demands something from Conor that no one else does - the fearsome truth.

"You know that your truth, the one you hide, Conor O'Malley, is the thing you are most afraid of."

Readers will be swept up by Conor's journey as he travels through his tricky forest of grief and pain with the monster as his guide. You will feel Conor's loneliness, his despair, his rage, and his utter sorrow. Patrick Ness has taken this idea by the late Siobhan Dowd and brilliantly weaved it into a beautiful book that readers of all ages will enjoy.

"You do not write your life with words, the monster said. You write it with actions. What you think is not important. It is only important what you do."

The illustrations by Jim Kay are particularly beautiful, full of movement and emotion that will give a reader pause. The darkness and the light jump off the page. Even though the subject matter and the illustrations are dark, do not let this deter you. The beauty of A MONSTER CALLS is its ability to traverse this slippery tale by focusing on the fear, instead of the sorrow. It may hit a reader hard if the subject matter hits close to home, but this book should not be missed.

I highly recommend A MONSTER CALLS for you, for your family, for your best friend.

THE SECOND:

If we measure the success of a book by the level of emotion it elicits in a reader, than A MONSTER CALLS is surely at the top of my list.

"Stories are like wild creatures, the monster said. When you let them loose, who knows what havoc they might wreak?"

When I opened this book, and let it loose, it certainly did wreak havoc.
I wish I could tell you I read A MONSTER CALLS in one sitting, because not only is it possible, but it's probably recommended to get the full effect. Instead, I forced myself to walk away from it. Several times. I was hoping to take a breather, hoping the ending wouldn't hit me as hard as I thought it might.

I was wrong.

A MONSTER CALLS left me in a puddle of tears and a sob stuck in my throat that still hasn't gone away. Still. You see, I was Conor. I was ten years older than Conor, so I didn't have the bullies tormenting me, or the grandma to scold me. But, I did have a mom with cancer. I had the loneliness that pushed my friends away. I had the few friends that wouldn't let me. I had the disillusion that I was in control. I had the truth, and the stubbornness that wouldn't let see it. What I missed, what I needed, was the monster to put a hand on my shoulder and guide me, to tell me the truth was okay, no matter how ugly it might seem.

It has been 11 years since my mom died of cancer, and even though I'm an adult and time has passed, there is a lot about that time I wish I could change. Like Conor, I didn't want to let go. I wouldn't let her go. I sill hold on to a lot of guilt, even though common sense tells me there was nothing I could have said or done that would have kept my mom alive. I know there was nothing I needed to say, because she knew it all. Moms always do. Here I am, though, 11 years later, and the truth still hurts...and I still can't let her go.

This second review has been beyond difficult to write, to share. I'm not even sure I'll keep it here. But, it's just you and me. Two friends, in a dark room. Holding onto a pillow. Until the tears stop falling and sobs end, and life moves forward. Thank you for allowing me to share this with you.

If you have a friend or loved one who has experienced loss, give them this book with care...but give it to them. They might just learn something about themselves from Conor, the monster, and their stories.

Review: Silver Girl by Elin Hilderbrand

Even better than I had anticipated!

Meredith Delin's husband, Freddy, was convicted of stealing billions of dollars from his investment firm's clients, and was sent to jail for 150 years. Meanwhile, Meredith's home, clothes, cars and bank accounts have been possessed by the government. No matter that she lived in an elite section of Manhattan or that she had custom made couture gowns in her closet. She is left with nothing except a small savings from before her marriage, one suitcase of clothes, and a small box of personal possessions including a cherished record her father gave her as a gift. Still under investigation, no one will speak to her except for her lawyer. She can't even get her hair done, because she has been blacklisted, not that she could afford her regular cut and color anyway.

Meredith made the only call she could - to her childhood friend, Connie. Even though it had been quite some time since the two friends spoke, and as strained as that last meeting was, Connie invited Meredith to stay with her at her Nantucket home for the summer. It is here the two friends reconnect and Connie realizes just how lonely she was before Meredith came to stay. Unfortunately for the two friends, trouble follows Meredith. The two women may be sharing the same house, and they may have shared a past, but they have their own challenges, their own family problems and their own inner turmoils to battle. In spite of it all, love manages to find its way in to the friends' summer plans.

Not only do I enjoy Elin Hilderbrand's writing, I have come to anticipate the releases of her novels with fervor. She writes the quintessential summer book. The setting is always Nantucket in the summer, her writing is smart and fast-paced, and her storyline grabs a reader's attention and keeps the pages turning.

Even though this book is not written in the first-person, the stories alternate between those of Meredith and Connie. For this reason, the audiobook has two narrators, both of which read their parts beautifully. This switch in narration allowed me to feel more empathetic toward these characters, root for them, and cry for them.

We may be too far to add this to your summer reading list, but if you are planning on escaping the winter chill, take SILVER GIRL on vacation with you!

It's a great gift book for those people in your life that like Trivial Pursuit or Jeopardy...or something to read each morning while they're eating their Corn Flakes (which, in a 1907 ad campaign, offered a free box of cereal to any woman who winked at her grocer.).

While I read ASHFALL, I couldn't help but recall scenes from one of my favorite books, The Road by Cormac Macarthy (reviewed here). Only, in this case, the writing is more accessible, especially to the younger audience for which it is intended.

I received this book for review, and the cover caught my attention, but it wasn't until I read Miss Remmers' Review that I picked it up. (Thank you again, Reagan!) And once I picked it up, I could not put it down. The only time I think I glanced up from the book was to ask my husband, "Could the supervolcano at Yellowstone actually erupt?" or, "How do we get water if we lose power and the generator?" or ,"Do you think we need a gun for protection in case of a cataclysmic event and everyone around us loses their minds?"

This is what happens to Alex, or more appropriately, what happens around Alex. The adults around him have fallen victim to one of the most devastating side-effects of a crisis - panic. The ugliness these people demonstrate is enough to make any person give up hope. Instead, Alex pushes forward, despite the dark skies, lack of natural resources, and unknown.

"The volcano had taken our homes, our food, our automobiles, and our airplanes, but it hadn't taken our humanity. No, we'd given that up on our own."

He sets out on a journey to find his family, meeting both hope and despair along the way. Most importantly, he meets Darla. She is one of the best female characters I have discovered all year. She's smart and practical, tough yet sensitive, and she becomes the one person in this ugly unknown world that Alex can trust.

Even though Alex is a typical teenager who fights with his sister and rebels against his parents, he is also a black belt in Taekwondo. As someone whose sons are currently enrolled in classes at the local dojang, I am learning that martial arts is more than punches, kicks, and defense. It's about hard work, commitment, and character. Alex is obviously a product of that.

I don't want to give too much of the storyline away, because I really want you to read this book. It's everything a book should be - interesting, creative, exciting, thoughtful, and suspenseful.

Even though I probably shouldn't have read this book following the Snowtober storm that dumped 16 inches of snow in my part of New Jersey, leaving us without power for a week, I HIGHLY recommend this book for adults and older teens alike. I especially think boys will be grabbed by the collar from the first page.

Ashfall was written to be a trilogy, with the second installment due out in October 2012 from Tanglewood Press.

Parents' Note: Many bookseller websites are recommending this book for ages 12 and up. I have raised that recommended age a bit to 14 years old. It has been a long time since I wrote a parents' note for any book, but I feel the violence in Ashfall may be too graphic for a younger audience. As always, when in doubt, read it yourself before giving it to your teen.

Movie Review: Holes

Great movie!

We recently read (and reviewed) HOLES by Louis Sachar and set off to watch the film. Unfortunately, I failed in recording the movie to the DVR. Lucky for me, Walden Pond Press/Walden Media has some of the nicest people! A friend at Walden found out The 9 Year Old and I were reading the book, and she sent over the DVD!

We loved HOLES!! We are already on our third viewing!

First, the casting was perfection! For anyone who watches the movie adaptation of any book, you know this is the key to making or breaking the film. Shia LaBouf, Sigorney Weaver, Patricia Arquette and Jon Voight anchor this cast, which also includes rock solid actors like Henry Winkler, Tim Blake Nelson, Siobhan Fallon, and Eartha Kitt. But I think it's the boys that made this movie work - Armpit, ZigZag, Twitch, Magnet, X-Ray and especially Zero were played brilliantly. Not to mention, Mr. Louis Sachar makes an appearance in the movie as well as Mr. Collingwood!

One of the things that can also make or break a movie is the soundtrack. At times, I wanted to rewind the movie, just to listen to the song again! One of the songs in the soundtrack is performed in part by the boys in the cast. It's a great song, you can check out part of the video (with clips of them in the recording studio) of the D-Tent boys singing Dig It.

I just have to laugh. We have recently seen trailers, television shows or movies with Jon Voight, and every time The 9 Year Old sees him, he says, "It's Mr. Sir!" Mr. Voight, for all of your memorable and brilliant roles, in our house, you will, from this point forward, be known as Mr. Sir.

Read the book. See the movie. In that order. You will not be disappointed! (Might even make a great gift set for the Middle Grader in your life!!)

One of my favorite Middle Grade books for boys!

"There is no lake at Camp Green Lake."

The judge told Stanley Yelnats he had a choice: he could go to a juvenile correction facility or he could go to Camp Green Lake. He chose camp Green Lake where he was to dig a hole each day, because, "If you take a bad boy and make him dig a hole every day in the hot sun, it will turn him into a good boy." Stanley learns that the holes have purpose, and Green Lake has a past.

There really are two stories in this book - the story of Stanley at his time at Camp Green Lake, and the friendships he forms with the boys in his group; and the story of people like Kissing Kate Barlow, who lived at Green Lake when there actually was a lake there. The two stories come together in the end in one of the most clever, interesting Middle Grade books I have ever read.

The 9 Year Old noticed the movie was coming on television and asked to see it. Well, you should all know by now of the rule in our house - you MUST read the book BEFORE you see the movie! (Movie review coming!)

Both of us flew through HOLES, and agreed that it's one of our favorites! We spent a lot of time laughing about and talking about HOLES. The two stories, and the way they come together is exciting and imaginative, but we spent most of our time talking about the cast of characters. The boys in Stanley's group at Camp Green Lake are diverse, interesting, and hilariously funny. What else would you expect when you put twelve boys in the desert all day?

As funny and clever as this book is, HOLES is also a thoughtful tale of family, greed, selflessness, and friendship.

I highly recommend HOLES!!

Review: Wolfsbane by Andrea Cremer

I really wanted to love this one, but I didn't find it nearly as enjoyable as the first book in Andrea Cremer's NIGHTSHADE series.

Synopsis (from official website, because I'm afraid of giving away too much):
This thrilling sequel to the much-talked-about Nightshade begins just where it ended-Calla Tor wakes up in the lair of the Searchers, her sworn enemy, and she's certain her days are numbered. But then the Searchers make her an offer-one that gives her the chance to destroy her former masters and save the pack-and the man-she left behind. Is Ren worth the price of her freedom? And will Shay stand by her side no matter what? Now in control of her own destiny, Calla must decide which battles are worth fighting and how many trials true love can endure and still survive.

In a word, this sequel was slow. Calla is with the Searchers in their hidden lair, and she learns a lot about them, their history, and how her pack came to be under the leadership of the Keepers. Unfortunately, this is a solid two-thirds of the book, and not much actually seems to happen.

There are a few revelations that I wish I could say were startling, or surprising, but Andrea Cremer may have hinted at them one too many times to make me gasp in surprise. Calla was torn between Ren and Shay in the first NightShade book, and she seems to have made a decision by the end of this installment, yet I'm not really sure she's comfortable with it. She loves them both.

It is said more than once, "Alphas are born, not made," yet I was waiting for Calla to embrace her role as Alpha, even in her love life...especially in her love life. The Keepers were no longer with her to hold her back, and the elder Alphas were not there to push her down. I wanted her to stop acting like a little naive girl and show some courage.

I'm hoping this is what Bloodrose will give us when it is released January 3, 2012.

I also have to make a note on the audiobook. I believe the same narrator read WOLFSBANE that read NIGHTSHADE, yet this time her voice wanted to make me listen to the book on 1.5 speed. She was a little too dreamy and added to the slow pace of this book.

I'm sorry, but I didn't enjoy this one as I had hoped I would.

Book to Movie Review: Breaking Dawn Pt. 1

I'm about to get my snark on, so if anyone is feeling particularly sensitive to their love for all things Twilight, you may want to move on. I'll wait while you pack up your Twilight tent, shirts, replica of Bella's ring, and commemorative plates. Oh, don't forget your wedding dress and the Eclipse wine. (seriously?!?)

Yes, I'm talking to you. Put down the glitter and back away from the cardboard cutout of Robert Pattinson.

First off, you must know, I loved the first three books in the TWILIGHT SAGA. Loved. I'm not a Twilight hater, at ALL. (This is usually the part where I tell you how I was one of the first people to read and love the series, and waited for each book's release...but that's redundant and braggy, so I'll leave it out). Breaking Dawn, the book, was, in my opinion, stretching this storyline too far into the realm of ridiculousness. All due respect to Stephenie Meyer, whose writing I adore (go read THE HOST if you haven't done so already!) she lost me at Renesmee.

So, this past weekend, I went to see Breaking Dawn Part 1. Why? You ask. I didn't particularly like the book, so why did I see the movie? Curiosity, my friends, Curiosity.

You should also know that I have been the obnoxious person in the movie theater giggling at Kristen Stewart's stuttering over her lines, Robert Pattinson's Chanel Lipstick (Red Passion No. 5, if I'm not mistaken), and the awkward lack of chemistry between the two. I apologize, but I couldn't help myself. I have never connected to the cast, and had a very hard time with the movies...all of them, even the adaptations of the books I loved.

The one thing that really shocked me was the lack of dialogue. Was this because K-Stew had so much trouble remembering her lines for the first three movies? Did they turn her microphone off so we didn't hear her sighing and figured, hey, why not stop her from speaking altogether? Did someone actually think that R-Patt was at his best giving brooding looks? (I'm still miffed that the producers didn't allow R-Patt to slay us with his British accent. I would have suspended that disbelief! Brits are sexy.) I don't know if it's a sound issue, but it was as if they had a quiet set and all the actors had to whisper. None of the dialogue, as little of it there was, felt natural or comfortable.

Don't even get me started on the inappropriate soundtrack selections! The music didn't match the movie in several places. This just added to the already awkward vibe.

Jacob had the most, and best, dialogue of the entire movie, except for Charlie (LOVE Charlie!!). In fact, we wanted more of Jacob. He's adorable, and his acting has grown beyond hot-guy-without-a-shirt. We also missed the banter between Jacofb and Rosalie. She didn't call him a dog nearly enough, nor did he give his cute half-smile, and a sarcastic, "Sure, sure," that I grew to love in the books. More Charlie and more Jacob next time, please. The story is about Edward and Bella, you say? Pfshh. whatever.

Speaking of Edward and Bella...as if you didn't know by now...they get married. The best part of the wedding? The TOASTS! Hilarious! Ok, ok, so I loved her dress too. It was perfect - elegant, unique, beautiful, and true to the books with a touch of lace. It fit K-Stew perfectly too (more on her bod later). There are no pictures on the web that do the dress justice - you have to see it from all sides to really appreciate it. Gorgeous.

The worst part of the movie for me? Wolf pack meeting voiceovers - so bizarre. It made me think of the dogs from Pixar's UP. Squirrel!

At least the movie opened with Jacob losing his shirt within the first 15 seconds...unfortunately, that was the only time you'll see him lose his shirt, so enjoy it while you can. Ugh, does this make me sound creepy? Taylor Lautner is adorable, and as someone firmly planted in Team Jacob, he has made me proud.

During the honeymoon, I couldn't help but notice K-Stew's bod - she looked great! Made me realize I need to hit the gym. That is, until she didn't look so great. In fact, they made her look like Gollum in the post-honeymoon scenes.

The most interesting part of the movie happens AFTER THE CREDITS...PAY ATTENTION PEOPLE! Someone tried to get all clever by introducing some interesting between-the-credits scenes with the Volturi. We accidentally caught it because we were too stunned with underwhelmed confusion to get out of our seats fast enough in the dark. Whose idea was this?!?

I think readers who actually enjoyed Breaking Dawn the Book will find Breaking Dawn the Movie entertaining and slightly less uncomfortable, if not downright nauseating at times (vomit, blood, bruises and Gollum - I truly was nauseous and said "ew" a LOT). Those of us who do not acknowledge Breaking Dawn The Book as part of the great Twilight trilogy will find Breaking Dawn the Movie just as ridiculous as the book.

Because I am a glutton for punishment, I will probably see Part 2 and suffer through Bella's sparkling.

Don't be afraid, K-Stew actually smiles in this movie. Just once, so I felt like I had to share the still.

Editing this post to add: I have gotten some *ahem* backlash on my snark, so I felt that I should add another statement. I fully and honestly admit that I am thirty-something years old. Neither the books NOR the movies were intended for me and my generation of women (despite the age of some women camping out). Were I in my teens, I would be all over The Twilight Saga movies and books. Had I not grown up in the era of Sixteen Candles, Say Anything and The Breakfast Club, Robert Pattinson would be my Jake Ryan, Kellan Lutz would be my Judd Nelson, and Taylor Lautner would be my John Cusack. So, despite my snark, I get it. I really do. If you're a teen.

(Oh, and by the way, I just wasted a solid 30 minutes on YouTube looking at clips from some of my favorite 80s films. You know what? I still love Judd Nelson and John Cusack...and still have a crush on Jake Ryan!)

Review: Beauty Queens by Libba Bray

Beauty and brains!

Even though this book has been sitting in my BEA box of goodies since May, and other bloggers have raved about it, and Scholastic's This Is Teen team has been gently nudging me to read it, I expected something completely different. I thought I was picking up a light, humorous book that poked fun at pageants, highlighting the objectification of women. Instead, what I got was a book that ...well, I'm still trying to wrap my head around it all!

Laugh-out-loud hysterical, BEAUTY QUEENS is a satirical novel of empowerment, independence, love, self-actualization, sisterhood, overcoming obstacles, and the issues of society itself, yet it's cleverly disguised as an over the top sit-com, complete with Corporation commercials and public service announcements. Oh, you are so clever, Libba Bray!

Reality show pirates...lesbians...depilatory cream bombs...sign language...

After surviving a plane crash on a supposedly deserted island, Teen Dream pageant contestants found themselves having to survive in a harsh environment - and that includes their leader, Miss Texas, Taylor Rene Krystal Hawkins. Miss Texas is the ultimate Teen Dream contestant, and leader of their motley tribe of beauty queens. Also on the island: Miss New Hampshire, Adina Greenberg; Miss Nebraska, Mary Lou Novak; Miss Michigan, Jennifer Huberman; Miss Rhode Island, Petra West; Miss California, Shanti Sing; Miss Illinois, Sosie Simmons; and poor Miss New Mexico who has a tray stuck in her head.

Yes, she has a TRAY...stuck in her HEAD.

Each beauty queen has a story to tell, punctuated by her very own Teen Dream questionnaire. What we learn early on, is that each beauty queen also has a secret to hide, whether it be an issue of sexuality, race, gender, disability or feminism. Just when I was sure that Ms. Bray was about to cross into that dreaded zone of melodrama and predictability, I remembered that these issues are very real in our current society. And, she managed to surprise me at each turn, giving me a virtual smack in the face.

I seriously could talk about this book for days. Each character deserves her own review!

Watch out readers, just when you're giggling away, you might find yourself learning a thing or two!On a personal note, I have avoided Young Adult lit that deals with GLBT topics, because I was afraid of inadvertently being insensitive to an issue that deserves the utmost care. Instead, I always left it up to the other YA bloggers. I don't want to ruin any of the book for you, but let's just say, I am so glad that this was a part of the book.

I have heard great things about the audiobook version of BEAUTY QUEENS, narrated by author Libba Bray herself. I must tell you, read the first few pages. If you can't "hear" the sarcasm required for this book to work, I suggest you fire up the iPod and go for the audiobook.

I want to thank you all for sending your get-well wishes to me, and especially to The 9 Year Old. He responded well to the antibiotics once we convinced him to take them. Review: Crossed by Ally Condie

A worthy sequel to my favorite YA of 2010.

Since every synopsis I write myself contains a boatload of spoilers, and had to be deleted, I'm leaving the main points to Penguin's professionals.

Synopsis:
In search of a future that may not exist and faced with the decision of who to share it with, Cassia journeys to the Outer Provinces in pursuit of Ky - taken by the Society to his certain death - only to find that he has escaped, leaving a series of clues in his wake.

Cassia's quest leads her to question much of what she holds dear, even as she finds glimmers of a different life across the border. But as Cassia nears resolve and certainty about her future with Ky, an invitation for rebellion, an unexpected betrayal, and a surprise visit from Xander - who may hold the key to the uprising and, still, to Cassia's heart - change the game once again. Nothing is as expected on the edge of Society, where crosses and double crosses make the path more twisted than ever

While some series tend to simply continue the story, Ally Condie has created entirely new challenge in CROSSED. Cassia and Ky are still very much the same, but they know more...and less...about the Society and what's beyond its borders. Xander (oh, Xander) also plays a role in this book, which left me a bit breathless. It's a puzzle, and we're all trying to figure out the pieces. Everyone has secrets to hide and lies to tell. In the meantime, Cassia and Ky need to find one another.

The chapters alternate between Cassia and Ky, so the reader is given access to what each of them are doing. While I usually feel that this writing method is overdone, especially in YA, I feel like it fits here because each character has their own quest, their own story to tell.

CROSSED is the second part in Ally Condie's Matched series. I absolutely flipped for MATCHED, which was my pick for the #1 Young Adult book of 2010 (For original review, click HERE). For this reason, I was a bit afraid to read CROSSED. While I preferred MATCHED, I feel like CROSSED is a worthy sequel and I can't wait to read the third book, which will be released in November 2012. (I have a long time to wait!)

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday!!

Growing up, our house was open to family and friends on this special day each year. My mom had a way of welcoming everyone, setting a table to fit as many people that walked through the door, sometimes snaking the tables and chairs into the entryway itself. She always did so without showing the work involved, always with a smile, no matter the disaster that might occur (flood in the laundry room; fire in the oven; or a last minute dash to the food store for Stove Top due to an unfortunate ingredient mistake. Good times!) Even though I miss my mom like crazy on Thanksgiving, I feel connected to her today, as this was her favorite holiday as well. I can feel her hands guiding me, I can see her smile in my mind's eye, and I can hear her laughter among those that are around me.

I have since inherited the holiday from her. I have also made my own traditions, blending my husband's beloved parts of the holiday (Nana's Chestnut Stuffing) with my own family's favorites (a lively round of Family Feud between courses), and always starting the day with the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on TV.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid balloon!

Unfortunately, for the first time in a long time, we will not be celebrating Thanksgiving surrounded by 20+ members of my family today. The 9 year old has pneumonia, and I will juggle my roles as Nurse Mom and Chef Mom today. I will still make a turkey dinner, just a very scaled-down version of the feast that usually is our Thanksgiving Day Dinner. And, of course, my extended family and my friends will be in my thoughts and prayers today.

Whatever your traditions may be today, I wish you love, happiness, and peace.

Not only will I celebrate my favorite holiday this weekend, I plan to reward myself for a Turkey Day well done by curling up with a few good books!

Review: Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand

Brilliant! Mesmerizing! Fearless!

UNBROKEN is the true story of Louis Zamperini. As a boy, Louie was a holy terror, always in trouble and running from authority. His brother helped Louie channel his energy into running competitively, and through a combination of talent and pure stubbornness, Zamperini made it to the Berlin Olympics, on pace to surpass the four-minute mile. Like many able-bodied men of that era, Louie enlisted in the army during WWII and became an airman. With little more than tin cans to fly, our airmen died as often in training as they did in battle. Louie's bomber crashed into the Pacific and disappeared - beginning one of the most extraordinary stories of perseverance, tenacity, and will to live.

"To be an enlisted prisoner of war under the Japanese was to be a slave." Unfortunately for Louie, to be an unlisted prisoner of war was far worse.

UNBROKEN reads like a novel - a fast-paced, action-packed, suspenseful thriller. There were times I had to remind myself that I was not reading fiction. The unimaginable horrors that Louis Zamperini endured during WWII haunted me, yet compelled me to turn the pages. There is nothing delicate about this story, but Laura Hillenbrand pieces it all together in a way that no one else could. I hate the term "readable" but considering the size and scope of Louie's story, UNBROKEN certainly is readable.

It's incredible how the cast of characters come in and out of Louie's life, it feels so unbelievable, all the coincidences and chance-meetings. The most amazing thing is the thorough representations of these men. They were not just supporting characters in Louie's story, they had their own stories to tell:

"Commander John Fitzerald had been in Japanese custody since April 1943. For two and a half years, he'd been forced to grovel before sadists and imbeciles as he tried to protect his men. He'd been starved, beaten, enslaved, given the water cure, had his fingernails torn out."

Even when I wanted to cheer for Louie and his friends, my heart broke. You will want to cheer for Louie; cry for him; fight for him; and save him.

If you read one non-fiction book this year, read UNBROKEN.

Many thanks to my friend, Ann Marie, for recommending UNBROKEN. It is lovingly placed on my Shelf of Fame next to my other favorites.
